This significant site, on Port Philip Bay in Williamstown, is managed by a community that really wanted to give it a new lease of life as an attractive hub of maritime related activity. Our research spanned the magnificent location, the site’s history and heritage, its original uses, its role in the making of Melbourne and its connections to the wider world.
We looked at global examples of maritime precincts and the convergence of interpretation, retail, food and entertainment with maritime industry. We talked to tenants, neighbours, heritage agencies, community groups and seafarers. We listened to their needs, the challenges they faced and their future prospects.
The resulting Masterplan and Business Case achieved a significant investment and they commenced the design and construction phase of the first stage in 2017.
